Ontario's wild Steelhead

Ontario steelhead are
arguably the hardest fighting fish around. We are lucky to have steelhead in
many of our rivers from September until May giving us 9 months to target
these silver bullets. With most trout species in Ontario, catching only 1 or
2 fish over 20 inches is considered a great day, but with these hard
fighting fish its not uncommon to catch 10 or more over 20" in a day. We've had many
customer catch 20 or 30 on their trip out with us and some are over
15lbs.
Wild Steelhead:
what do we mean
by wild steelhead and why all the fuss over wild steelhead. All steelhead in
the rivers are in a wild environment but what we consider a wild fish is one
that was born naturally in the river and not stocked. These wild fish tend to fight harder and longer then
their stocked brothers and in rivers like the Nottawasaga where the wild
populations are over 95% wild and have not been stocked in many years the
wild fish tend to be even stronger.
We guide our customers through miles of
private lands for un-pressured fish and are averaging over 10 a day during
peak times.
Best times are mid
October to late November with peak fishing to 3 week period of the last week
of October and the first 2 weeks of November.
Don't miss your chance to experience
some of Ontario's best steel heading
Best Times
Prime Time Fall:
October 20th to November 25th
The steelhead start showing up in the
rivers around September 1st or just after the first big rains of September.
By the middle of October the rivers are usually full of steelhead with many
10 to 20 fish days from Mid October to Mid November. Some good numbers of
steelhead can be caught in early October and even as late as the end of
December.
Prime Spring Time:
April 1st to May 15th
Although the river conditions are hit
and miss this time of year wee have some great days in the spring. The most
success in from the 4th Saturday in April until the 2nd or 3rd week in May.
Winter Fishing:
December 15 to March 15
It's usually pretty cold in
January and February but the fishing can be hot if the conditions are right.
The steelhead trickle in over the winter months slowly making their way
up river and often holding in the deeper pool. We've had 20 fish days between January and March but we don't usually
pre-book trips during this period. If this is the type of trip you are
interested in, contact us and get on our waiting list and we will call you
when the fishing is hot.
